GMS Concert - Quatuor Avena Saxophone Quartet
Date: Monday, 1st April 2019
The GRAHAMSTOWN MUSIC SOCIETY is proud to present the QUATUOR AVENA SAXOPHONE QUARTET in its next concert on Monday 1 April.
Where: NELM Auditorium, 25a Worcester Street.
Cost: R90pp adults, R70pp pensioners, R50pp tertiary students, GMS members and school children - Free.
We are particularly proud to welcome back Adam Campbell, a past Kingswood College pupil, who will be featured on Baritone Saxophone.
The Quatuor AVENA was formed in 2016 after four young saxophonists, each one from a different part of the world (Italy, Japan, France and South Africa) met for their musical studies in Strasbourg at the Haute Ecole des Arts du Rhin.
Their pleasure and passion for playing together in chamber music brought them together for a new adventure which has since turned into the Quatuor AVENA.
Given their different social and musical backgrounds the four young musicians set out working on a repertoire rich in variety, from Baroque transcriptions to contemporary
music, adding in music from around the globe along the way and even bringing in jazz standards, they have explored the potential of the saxophone quartet formation, and are now considered one of Europe’s most vibrant and talented young saxophone quartets.
They have performed in a variety of venues around France, with concerts in Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Remirement, but have equally had several
performances abroad including their performance in Zagreb, Croatia, as part of the World Saxophone Congres, their performances in Verona, Italy, and their 2017 tour of
Japan which was a certain highlight with performances in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Kurashiki.
They have won several awards, a « Prix d’honneur » at the prestigious Leopold Bellan Chamber Music Competition, Paris, first prize plus the special “APEC” award at the Boulogne Billancourt International Chamber Music Competition in 20th Century Music in Paris (November 2017), the first prize and Kazou Tomioka award at the
International Saxophone Competition in Kurashiki, Japan (October 2017) and the first prize in the National Chamber Music competition in Remirement, France (June 2017).
The GMS Concert presenting the Quatuor Avena will be accompanied by an exhibition of Grahamstown artist, Ashwin Pienaar.
